Spotify has unveiled Nigerian Afrobeats talent, Fola, and South African Afro-house DJ and producer, Thakzin, as the latest additions to its RADAR Africa programme an initiative aimed at spotlighting the continent’s next generation of music icons.
According to the streaming platform, both artistes have made significant contributions to the evolving soundscape of Sub-Saharan Africa and are helping shape the future of global music.
Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, described RADAR as more than a platform a launchpad for boundary-pushing creators. “It reflects Spotify’s commitment to empowering local artistes and delivering the best listening experience across the continent,” she said.
“From Lagos to Johannesburg, RADAR celebrates Africa’s musical diversity and gives artistes equal access to global audiences. We believe in the power of African storytelling through music,” Okumu added.
She praised Fola and Thakzin for their originality, noting that their inclusion in RADAR underscores the initiative’s mission to amplify unique African voices. “By sharing their journeys, we aim to inspire other creatives to pursue their vision and aim for global stages,” she said.
Fola, born Folarin Odunlami, rose to fame through social media freestyles, blending Afrobeats rhythms with heartfelt storytelling. His breakout EP What A Feeling, which features the Bella Shmurda-assisted hit “Who Does That,” cemented his place as a rising star. He has since collaborated with BNXN, Magixx, and BhadBoi OML.
“Every opportunity is a blessing,” Fola said. “I want fans to know that in all the noise, I created something real something they can feel and share. These are the early days of something truly special.”
Thakzin, from Ivory Park in Johannesburg, draws influence from jazz, kwaito, and traditional percussion. His distinct Afro-house sound, inspired by African spirituality and healing, has earned him recognition from industry giants like Black Coffee and international tastemakers such as Laurent Garnier.
His 2023 track “The Magnificent Dance” and a viral remix of DJ Kent’s “Horns In The Sun” have both resonated strongly within and beyond South Africa.
Raised in a musical home and guided by his father, a keyboardist, Thakzin merges deep harmonies with rhythmic drum patterns to deliver a powerful and immersive sound.
