T2 Launch: Minister applauds 9mobile rebrand, vows support for telecom expansion

The Federal Government through the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani has hailed the rebranding of 9mobile to T2 as a “bold statement of intent” for innovation and growth in the nation’s telecoms sector.

Speaking during the unveiling in Lagos, the Minister said the transformation signalled renewed commitment to service excellence and deeper contributions to Nigeria’s digital economy.

“In just over two decades, we’ve grown from a few hundred thousand mobile lines to more than 220 million today,” he said.

“Broadband penetration has jumped from single digits to almost 50 percent, all without a kobo of government subsidy.

That’s worth a resounding round of applause.”

Bosun noted that the telecoms sector now accounts for about 16 percent of GDP, supports millions of jobs, and powers e-commerce, e-government, and national security systems.

“We’ve built Africa’s largest and most competitive telecom market, attracting billions in global investment,” he added.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide, announcing plans to roll out 90,000 kilometres of open-access fibre across all geo-political zones and 700 new telecom sites to connect 20 million underserved Nigerians.

Describing T2 as “more than just a service provider,” the Minister called the rebrand a partnership in delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Let this be more than a change of colours,” he charged. “Let it mean innovation, stronger networks, and better service for the millions who depend on you daily.”

He assured that the government would keep working with investors willing to take bold steps in shaping Nigeria’s digital future.

“The future belongs to those who embrace change before it is forced upon them. Tonight, we celebrate progress but even more, the possibilities ahead,” he concluded.
