Streaming farms are hindering breakout artists — Magixx

Singer Magixx has accused streaming farms of blocking the rise of new talent in Nigeria’s music industry, suggesting that chart placements are being artificially influenced.

The Mavin Records artiste took to his X account to express frustration over what he described as the widespread buying of chart positions, which he said is making it harder for genuine breakout acts to gain visibility.

“Just so y’all know, the reason why we don’t have enough breakout artists these days is because almost every spot on Apple Music is bought!” he wrote.

Concerns over the use of streaming farms, systems that allegedly inflate play counts using bots or automated processes, have stirred controversy in recent years. While many insiders have raised suspicions, others in the industry continue to downplay or reject the claims.

Magixx’s remarks come despite previous denials from Don Jazzy, his label head and founder of Mavin Records.

Last year, Don Jazzy dismissed allegations that he manipulates streaming figures for his artistes, insisting that such practices either do not exist or, if they do, he has no part in them.

The conversation around the credibility of chart rankings and fairness on digital platforms remains a contentious issue within Nigeria’s fast-growing music scene.
