Scavenger arraigned for alleged N500,000 railway theft in Ibadan

 A 32-year-old scavenger, Alimi Saheed, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, for allegedly vandalising and stealing railway track components valued at N500,000.



The accused, whose address was not disclosed, is standing trial on a two-count charge of vandalism and stealing. He pleaded not guilty to both counts.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Samuel Owolabi, told the court that the offences were committed at about 3:30 p.m. on 11 August at Akobo Oju-Irin railway track, Ibadan.

He alleged that Saheed unlawfully vandalised and carted away rail track E-clips worth N500,000, property of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 451(5) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

Chief Magistrate Miss G. T. Oladele granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the matter to 10 September for hearing.
