Oil palm farmers urge FG to boost security, investment in Imo State

Oil palm farmers in Imo State have appealed to the Federal Government for enhanced security and increased support to improve production and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s economy.

The call was made during a capacity-building workshop organised by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) in Owerri. Chairperson of the National Palm Producers Association of Nigeria (NPPAN), Mrs. Rhoda Chukwueze, stressed the urgent need for government intervention, highlighting inadequate machinery and poor funding as major constraints affecting productivity.

“Our milling machines are outdated, and funding is scarce. We need serious investment to revamp operations,” Chukwueze said.

Another farmer, Mrs. Patricia Okpara from Obosima in Owerri West Local Government Area, expressed appreciation to NEPC for distributing improved palm seedlings in 2024 but raised concerns about worsening insecurity in rural areas. She said the threat to farmers’ safety was affecting access to farms and disrupting production.

“Insecurity is a major setback. Farmers can’t work in fear. We need the government to prioritise our safety,” she added.

Speaking earlier, NEPC Coordinator in Imo, Mr. Anthony Ajuruchi, said the workshop focused on post-seedling planting management and was part of efforts to boost long-term yields. He explained that the council had introduced improved seedlings last year to replace aging palm trees and increase productivity over time.

“We are working to enhance both the volume and value of oil palm output by equipping farmers with the right knowledge and tools,” Ajuruchi said.

The event also included free health screenings to ensure the well-being of the farmers.
