NIMASA orders ships to comply with global anti-pollution standards

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has directed all vessels operating within the nation’s waters to strictly observe the provisions of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI.

MARPOL Annex VI, already incorporated into Nigerian law through the Merchant Shipping Act of 2007, specifically regulates measures aimed at curbing air pollution from ships.

Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s marine environment and insisted that adherence to the convention remains compulsory for every vessel in the country’s waters. He said Nigeria is determined to bring its maritime operations in line with international standards on safety, security, and environmental protection.

“In line with our statutory responsibilities under the NIMASA Act 2007 and the Merchant Shipping Act 2007, we have issued a Marine Notice to guide shipowners, charterers, and shipping companies on their obligations. While we support the growth of shipping businesses in Nigeria, we will not compromise international benchmarks,” Dr. Mobereola declared.

The Agency further announced that it would intensify monitoring and enforcement measures while working in collaboration with industry stakeholders to guarantee full compliance with global environmental requirements across Nigerian waters.
