Nigeria Union of Journalists lauds Security Forces over arrest of top Ansaru leaders

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has applauded the Nigerian government and security agencies for the arrest of two senior leaders of the Ansaru terrorist group.

The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, had over the weekend confirmed the capture of Mahmud Muhammad Usman, popularly known as Abu Bara’a, and his deputy, Mahmud al-Nigeri, also known as Malam Mamuda.

In a statement on Tuesday, NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, described the development as a major victory in Nigeria’s war against terrorism. He noted that Ansaru, a splinter faction of Boko Haram, has been behind some of the country’s most brutal attacks in the past decade.

According to Abdullahi, the success of the operation, which was driven by sustained intelligence gathering, demonstrates the bravery and professionalism of Nigeria’s security forces. He added that the digital evidence recovered during the raid would help in dismantling terror networks and preventing future attacks.

“The NUJ salutes the men and women who risk their lives daily to safeguard our country. We call on the government to continue supporting our security institutions and to ensure that justice is served swiftly and transparently,” he said.

The union further stressed that terrorism remains a major threat to peace, development, and democratic values in Nigeria, while reaffirming its support for all efforts aimed at restoring lasting stability. It also urged citizens to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and reject divisive narratives.
