Lagos State Government shuts Lekki event centre, arrests two for illegal waste burning

Lagos State Government has sealed Grace Garden Event Place in Lekki and arrested two suspects after enforcement officers caught them burning refuse on the premises.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the enforcement action on Tuesday. He confirmed that the arrests took place on Monday night when officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) enforcement team moved in on the facility.

According to Wahab, the suspects were apprehended while setting fire to waste from Grace Garden Event Place on Bisola Durosinmi-Etti Drive, Lekki. He gave their identities as Dominic Uja, 25, from Benue, and Barry Macaulay, 52, from Côte d’Ivoire. The men have been taken to the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps headquarters in Oshodi for prosecution.

“The event centre has been shut down and will remain sealed until further notice,” Wahab said, adding that the state would continue to clamp down on illegal waste disposal across Lagos.

The Commissioner cautioned residents and business owners against practices that endanger public health and the environment, stressing that anyone found guilty of such offences would be prosecuted under existing environmental laws.

The case against the suspects is expected to be filed once preliminary processes are completed, while the sealed facility will stay under government control until further directives are issued.
