Kaduna customary court jails businesswoman for misappropriation, cheating

A Customary Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, has sentenced a 40-year-old businesswoman, Mrs Blessing Danladi, to six months’ imprisonment for criminal misappropriation and cheating.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Esther Bishen, informed the court that the case was reported by Mr Israel Elisha at the Kafanchan Divisional Police Station on 13 August. Elisha alleged that he had entrusted his cassava farm to Danladi under an agreement that she would cultivate it and remit the proceeds to him.

Instead of honouring the agreement, the convict allegedly diverted the proceeds for her personal benefit. Following police investigations, she was charged under Sections 293 and 306 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

When the charges were read, Danladi admitted guilt and pleaded with the court for leniency.

Delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Patience Birat, sentenced her to six months’ imprisonment or a fine of N30,000 for criminal misappropriation, and another six months or a fine of N30,000 for cheating. The court ordered that both sentences run concurrently.

In addition, Danladi was directed to pay N120,000 in compensation to the complainant, following an application by the prosecutor.
