INEC confirms final list of candidates for Ibadan North By-Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the final list of candidates cleared to contest the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election, scheduled for Saturday, 16 August 2025.

This announcement comes in the wake of the death of Honourable Musliudeen Olaide Akinremi, a two-term member of the House of Representatives, who represented the constituency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) until his passing in July 2024.

In a statement issued on Monday, INEC disclosed that five political parties had successfully nominated candidates for the vacant seat, following the withdrawal or disqualification of aspirants from the initial nineteen parties that indicated interest.

The commission confirmed the following candidates will be contesting the by-election: Dexter Femi Akin-Alamu (African Democratic Congress, ADC); Adewale Haastrup Olatunji (All Progressives Congress, APC); Olabisi Olajumoke Odususi (All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA); Fola Sunday Oyekunle (Peoples Democratic Party, PDP); Hammed Badmus (Zenith Labour Party, ZLP).

While INEC did not specify the reasons for the exclusion of the other fourteen parties, it affirmed that the five final candidates had met all constitutional and regulatory conditions for participation.

The late Akinremi, widely known by his supporters as “Jagaban,” held significant political influence in Oyo State. He was re-elected to the National Assembly under the APC banner prior to his death.

The upcoming by-election is anticipated to be closely contested, as major parties aim to consolidate or expand their political foothold in one of the state’s most electorally sensitive constituencies.

INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting a transparent, credible, and efficient poll, and plans to deploy both personnel and technology to maintain full adherence to electoral protocols.
