Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State issues ultimatum to officials after Commissioner quits over drug trafficking allegation

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has issued a firm directive to all political appointees and civil servants under his administration, declaring that anyone unwilling or unable to uphold the government’s principles should step down without delay.

This warning followed the resignation of the Commissioner for Transportation, Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi Dala, after it emerged that he had been involved in securing bail for a suspected drug trafficker.

The Governor made his stance clear during the 30th meeting of the Kano State Executive Council, held at the Government House on Wednesday, 6 August 2025.

A statement issued by Mr Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, described the commissioner’s resignation as a move taken in the overriding public interest, given the sensitive nature of the issue.

While announcing his resignation, Dala insisted he was innocent of any wrongdoing but acknowledged that the burden of public opinion left him unable to continue in office.

“As a member of an administration that has consistently taken a strong position against the sale and consumption of illicit drugs, it behoves me to take this step, painful as it may be,” he said.

“While I maintain my innocence, I cannot ignore the weight of public perception and the need to protect the values we have collectively built.”

Governor Yusuf made it clear that his cabinet has zero tolerance for any form of misconduct. He cautioned that any official caught undermining the administration’s anti-drug stance would be promptly removed from their position.

“Let it be clear: we will not accept any behaviour, whether official or private, that compromises the values we stand for,” he stated. “Every public official must exercise caution and responsibility in both their public and private engagements.”

He described Dala’s resignation as a necessary development that should serve as a signal to others in government.

“If anyone among you feels that they can no longer carry the burden of trust entrusted to them, it is better to step aside voluntarily than to be found in misconduct that could tarnish the image of this administration,” the Governor told the Council.

Governor Yusuf also reiterated his administration’s continued resolve to combat drug abuse and trafficking, particularly among the youth, affirming that this commitment remains central to his policy agenda.

“We came into office with a clear mandate to restore sanity, integrity, and progress in Kano,” he said.

“That mission will not be compromised. I encourage all appointees to conduct themselves in a way that reflects and protects the values of this administration.”
