Google, Microsoft, TikTok submit 2024 compliance report on online safety – National Information Technology Development Agency

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for complying with Nigeria’s Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries and for submitting their 2024 compliance reports.

The Code of Practice, jointly issued by NITDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), sets out clear guidelines to enhance online safety and curb harmful content across digital platforms.

According to the reports, the platforms collectively recorded 754,629 registered complaints, carried out over 58.9 million content takedowns, addressed 420,439 user appeals, and closed more than 13.5 million accounts found to violate safety standards.

NITDA described the development as a significant step toward building a safer and more responsible digital ecosystem for Nigerian users, while noting that the compliance also underscores the platforms’ obligations to register in Nigeria, abide by local laws, and fulfill tax responsibilities.

“While these achievements are commendable, building a safer digital space requires continuous collaboration among stakeholders,” said Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations at NITDA, Mrs. Hadiza Umar.

She added that the agency remains committed to strengthening user safety measures, promoting digital literacy, and enhancing trust in Nigeria’s online environment.
