Anambra guber: Action Alliance candidate warns vote-buying endangers democracy

The Action Alliance (AA) governorship candidate in Anambra State, Chief Jeff Nweke, has condemned the rising culture of vote-buying, warning that it poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic process.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Awka, Nweke described vote-buying as the root of corruption and a practice that has eroded political decency and accountability. He said the trend, allegedly witnessed during the August 16 by-election in the state, must be confronted before it undermines the credibility of the forthcoming November 8 governorship election.

“It is unfortunate and shameful that what we are witnessing is an acute decay of decency in our politics. Vote-buying is a degeneration of sensible political strategy, breeding selfishness, corruption, and moral decay,” Nweke said.

He urged Nigerians to unite in condemning the practice, stressing that failure to act would have “generational consequences” for the nation’s democracy.

Nweke reaffirmed his commitment to running an issue-based campaign, with focus on security, welfare, social amenities, and accountability.
