Tensions flared on the Greek island of Rhodes as dozens of demonstrators gathered to protest the arrival of an Israeli cruise ship carrying 650 passengers. The protest, held outside the island’s port, ended with police detaining 15 individuals and pressing charges against eight for alleged racism and violent conduct toward officers.
Despite the demonstrations, passengers were able to disembark without interference. Authorities appeared to have tightened security following a similar incident on the island of Syros, where the same vessel was denied docking amid protests.
Greece’s Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis emphasized the right to peaceful protest but warned against violence or obstructing vessels. The cruise ship’s arrival highlights a growing trend of opposition against Israeli tourists in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The chairman of the Greek tourism union, Grigoris Chotzoglou, expressed concern over rising instability in the tourism sector, blaming fringe political groups for sparking unrest. He urged that the actions of a few should not undermine the broader industry, which heavily relies on Israeli visitors.
