FirstBank of Nigeria unveils advanced facial biometric technology for secure mobile banking

FirstBank of Nigeria has rolled out a facial biometric authentication feature on its mobile banking application, FirstMobile, enabling customers to enrol and activate their devices without the need for a debit card.

The new feature allows users to verify their identity through advanced facial recognition during registration and onboarding. It also includes anti-spoofing technology to detect and prevent impersonation attempts and unauthorised access.

This innovation marks a significant step forward in enhancing FirstMobile’s user experience, removing reliance on traditional card-based verification and addressing a broad range of customer needs.

“With these new services now live on FirstMobile, we are confident we will significantly improve our customers’ digital experience,” said Chukwuma Ezirim, Group Executive, E-Business and Retail Products Division at FirstBank.

The biometric solution caters to diverse user profiles, including new customers without existing cards, Nigerians in the diaspora who lack access to physical banking tools, individuals with lost or expired cards, users who prefer cardless transactions, and those facing challenges with card verification.

By expanding onboarding options, FirstBank is providing more inclusive access to essential services such as fund transfers, bill payments, and other digital transactions with enhanced speed and convenience.

“We recognise the need to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, and we are committed to offering innovative solutions that simplify banking,” Ezirim added. “Our aim is to make every interaction with FirstBank more rewarding and to build lasting relationships with our customers.”

The updated version of FirstMobile introduces several new features: Facial recognition-based sign-up and activation; Virtual credit cards for secure online purchases; Instant credit card activation; Flexible salary advance options, with repayment periods of up to three months; General performance enhancements and bug fixes for improved user experience.

Customers can access the upgraded features by updating FirstMobile via the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Returning users are encouraged to re-download the app to fully benefit from the new functionalities.

FirstBank described the introduction of facial biometrics as a strategic shift designed to make mobile banking more secure, accessible, and inclusive. Prior to this update, registration on FirstMobile required debit card verification, a hurdle for many prospective users.

The new facial recognition tool now provides a streamlined and secure alternative for accessing digital banking services.
