Health officials in Cambodia have confirmed the country’s 14th human case of H5N1 avian influenza this year, involving a 26-year-old man from Siem Reap province.
The Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday that the man tested positive for the highly pathogenic bird flu virus on July 26 following laboratory analysis conducted by the National Institute of Public Health. He is currently undergoing treatment after showing symptoms including fever, sore throat, stomach pain, and breathing difficulty.
Authorities revealed that the patient, a resident of Kravann village in Siem Reap city, had recently culled and plucked chickens near his home where several birds had died. Investigations are underway to trace the exact source of the infection and to identify anyone who may have had close contact with him.
Officials are on alert to prevent further community transmission and are closely monitoring those potentially exposed to the virus.
This latest case brings the total number of H5N1 infections in Cambodia to 14 in 2025, with five fatalities reported so far. Health experts continue to warn about the dangers of close human contact with infected poultry, particularly in rural areas where backyard farming is common.
