Senate confirms Ndidi Nwakuche as Controller-General of Nigerian Correctional Service

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche as the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

The confirmation took place on Tuesday following the presentation and consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North).

Presenting the report, Oshiomhole stated, “The Senate do receive and consider the report of the Committee on Interior on the confirmation of the nomination of Nwakuche, Sylvester Ndidi mni, MFR for appointment as Controller-General, Nigerian Correctional Service.”

Following the confirmation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged Nwakuche to prioritize efforts to curb jailbreaks across the country. “To whom much is given, much is expected. I hope that his appointment will bring an end to jailbreaks,” Akpabio said.

President Bola Tinubu had nominated Nwakuche for the position last week and forwarded his name to the Senate for confirmation. In a letter read during plenary by Akpabio, the President cited compliance with Section 3(1)(b) of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, as the basis for the nomination.

“In compliance with Section 3(1)(b) of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Act, 2019, I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Mr. Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi as Controller-General, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS),” the letter read. “While I hope that the Senate will consider this request in the usual expeditious manner, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

The nomination was referred to the Senate Committee on Interior for further legislative scrutiny, with a directive to report back within a week, leading to Tuesday’s confirmation.
