White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has pushed back on fired chief strategist Steve Bannon’s claim that US President Donald Trump’s decision to dismiss James Comey as director of the FBI was the biggest mistake in “modern political history,” saying Bannon tends to speak in extreme language.
In response to a reporter who asked Sanders about Bannon’s controversial Sunday interview with CBS, Sanders said she thinks “that Steve always likes to speak in kind of the most extreme measures. I’m not sure that I agree with that.”
In an interview with “60 minutes,” Bannon had said Trump’s decision to Comey was the biggest mistake in “modern political history.”
Bannon said Comey’s dismissal in early May was the main reason Trump’s “Russia collusion” case was blown out of proportions.
The press secretary dodged a question about whether the president agrees with Bannon's assessment that "the Republican establishment is trying to nullify the 2016 election."
"Not that I'm aware of, but I haven't had that conversation with him," she said.
