Police in Australia charged a 91-year-old man from Sydney with
importing 4.5kg of cocaine from India after he apparently fell victim to
a scam
Victor Twartz, from Sydney, allegedly smuggled 4.5kg of cocaine on a flight from New Delhi on July 8, but apparently was a victim of a scam.
The drugs were found inside 27 packets of soap.
Police warned travellers to be careful when packing luggage, saying smugglers may be charged even if they did not know they were carrying drugs.
"Luggage is a personal responsibility," said an Australian Federal Police commander, Tim Fitzgerald, in a statement.
"If you've been asked to carry something on behalf of another person, be sure you know exactly what is inside. We recommend that you do not allow another person to pack your bag and do not carry luggage on behalf of another person."
He appeared at Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court today, charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug.
Outside the court when asked by reporters if he had been taken advantage of.
"Always, always," Twartz replied.
The matter will return to court next month. He faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.Ola Mae Agee, who was imprisoned aged 87 for dealing crack from her house in Florida in 2010, has previously been labelled the world's oldest drug dealer.
In 2012, Francis Cook was labelled Britain's oldest drug dealer after he was convicted at age 83 for growing almost 200 cannabis plants.
