Sports: Arsenal rejected chance to sign Cheick Tiote for £12million

Arsenal have reportedly snubbed the chance to sign Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote for £12million, with the club holding out for a ‘top talent’.
Reports last week claimed that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was offered the defensive midfielder, with Tiote’s representatives and Arsenal believed to have held talks about a potential move to north London.

The combative Tiote has been a mainstay of the Magpies’ midfield since his move from FC Twente back in 2010, and is said to have caught the eye of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger this term.
However, The Mail have claimed that Wenger has now decided against signing the 28-year-old during this transfer window.
The publication states that Wenger wants a holding midfielder with the abilities of Tiote’s, but will wait for a ‘top talent’ before making a move.
Defensive-minded Francis Coquelin drew widespread plaudits for his performance as Arsenal toppled champions Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon, and Wenger was given a first-hand look at the benefits of a specialised holding midfielder in his engine room.
Tiote, who has made 12 appearances for Newcastle so far this season, is currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast. Reports suggest that the Ivorian is seeking a three-and-a-half year contract with wages of around £80,000 a week.
