Charlize Theron has renegotiated pay for forthcoming movie The Huntsman for more than $10 million

Charlize Theron has renegotiated pay for forthcoming movie The Huntsman for more than $10 million. Last month’s Sony email leaks revealed that Charlize would make less than costar Chris Hemsworth, much like other Hollywood actresses compared to their male coworkers. Theron decided to take action.

According to Business Insider, Charlize demanded that she be paid as much as Hemsworth. The Huntsman is a prequel to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman. The first movie earned nearly $397 million worldwide and starred Theron alongside Kristen Stewart and Hemsworth. Stewart will not play a role in the prequel.
Business Insider also reports that Theron was named Forbes Magazine’s sixth highest-paid actress in 2013. Forbes made this ranking according to Charlize’s mixed work on both small films and blockbusters, making Theron the type of actress with the bargaining power to demand equal pay.
“Theron likes to balance her work in smaller films, like 2011’s ‘Young Adult,’ with bigger-budget fare like last year’s ‘Snow White and the Huntsman.’ She also starred in ‘Prometheus,’ the kind-of prequel to ‘Aliens,’ which earned $403 million at the global box office. Theron supplements her movie money with high-paid endorsements for brands like Dior.”
Page Sixfirst reported that Charlize demanded more pay. Theron negotiated through her agents at WME and got a better deal for her role as Ravenna, the evil queen and step-mother to Snow White. Frank Darabont will direct. The Huntsman is in pre-production, with plans to release the movie in April 2016. Page Six also adds that “the deals were handled carefully” due to the drama surrounding the affair between Stewart and Rupert Sanders, who directed the first film.
“Charlize insisted that she get paid the same money as Chris. She has a great track record, so she got the same deal.”
Negotiations with this one will most likely not stop with Theron, Page Six speculates.
“One knock-on effect from the Sony hacking scandal is that there will be more sensitivity about equal pay for actresses and hiring practices at movie studios.”
